Navigating Change: How to Break the Cycle of Mistakes in Your IT Journey

Hey there, fellow IT enthusiasts! Let’s face it – in our world, change is the only constant so why do we keep doing the same things when we do not see the expected results?  My guess is repeating the same mistakes at work will lead to a not so good result.  Aren’t we, as IT professionals, expected to learn, adapt, troubleshoot, and grow?  Should we have less expectations about ourselves that employers have of us?

But breaking free from the same old mistakes? Now, that’s where focus and attention can make all of the difference.

In this blog, we’re diving into some straight-forward strategies to help you shake things up and steer clear of those repetitive mishaps in your IT career.

Take a Moment to Reflect – Time to breathe and do a little self-reflection. What’s been holding you up from making changes in the past? Any recurring “why did I do that again?  It didn’t work the last 10 times I did it.” Moments? Taking a breather to be consciously aware and understand why those slip-ups keep happening is the first step to breaking the cycle.

Keep the Learning Vibe Going – Learning never stops, especially in IT. Soak it up! Keeping up with the latest tech trends not only keeps you sharp but also helps you open up new opportunities and dodge outdated tech like yesterday’s news.

Let’s Get Experimental – This, for me, is the big one!  You know that definition of insanity you have heard 100 times?  Well, it’s time to listed.  Try out some new stuff. Take a new route home, eat at a new restaurant, watch a video about a piece of technology you’re not familiar with, or try your hand at having a conversation with AI.  New and different activities enhance neuroplasticity which makes it easier to learn and adapt to new situations.  Playing it safe all the time won’t get you anywhere, but calculated risks? Now, that’s where the magic happens.

Be Agile -Agile, my friend, is the name of the game. Break those big projects into bite-sized chunks and keep iterating. Instead of creating a big goal, break it down into small mini-projects (releases).  For example, if your writing a book, start with a goal of creating an outline or the 1st draft of the introduction.  When you do this, instead of success 6 months into the future, you create the opportunity for success now.

Team Up for Success – It’s all about teamwork, baby! Why do it alone?  Get together, collaborate, share ideas, create possible solutions, and connect with your teammates. You won’t feel alone and learn from others experience along the way.  Oh yeah, people actually like to help other people.  So, in a sense, you are giving someone the opportunity to help you and feel good about themselves.  Win-win!

Create Your Processes – Use the KISS principle, keep it simple, keep it organized, keep it achievable (e.g. SMART goals). Clear processes and achievable goals are your ticket to smooth sailing. When you have a process that creates the space to achieve, success happens.  Six Sigma the thing!  Create a process with an expected result and try it out.  If it works, rinse and repeat.  If not, troubleshoot and adjust, then see what happens.

Embrace the Oops Moments – Failure? Nah, it’s just another chance to learn and grow. Haven’t you heard from great minds, fail fast?  Embrace those slip-ups, my friend. Fact, everybody makes mistakes.  It’s what happens after that is as important, or even more important than the mistake itself.  They’re a great opportunity to learn and the stepping stones to greatness in your IT journey.

Seek Wisdom from the Gurus – Don’t be shy about asking for advice. Seek out feedback from the pros, swap stories with your fellow IT pals, and soak up knowledge like a sponge.  I’m guessing what you’re trying to do has been done before.  Why not learn from others mistakes?  Our brains want to take the shortest, most efficient path to success.

Keep Your Chill and Stay Organized – Stay cool, stay organized. Managing your time and setting priorities are your secret weapons against chaos. Whip out those productivity hacks (e.g. 3 things I will do today) and watch those mistakes become lessons learned.

So there you have it, folks – some tips to help you break free from the frustration of repeating the same old mistakes. Embrace change as an opportunity for success, keep learning, and remember, every stumble is just another chance to adapt and ride the wave to success in your IT journey.

Be Well!
